The Essential 2024 Cocktail Guide to Chicago

As the third largest city in the U.S. (and arguably the best), Chicago is brimming with iconic cocktail hot spots. From the cocktail connoisseur to the amateur mixologist just looking for a sophisticated sip, Chicago has you covered.

We’ve compiled a list of iconic Chicago spots to get the best cocktails – check it out below.

Fulton Market, West Loop:

Touted as Chicago’s Foodie District, Fulton Market in the West Loop boasts world-renowned restaurants with top-notch libations. Don’t miss The Aviary (955 W Fulton Market) – and below it, secret speakeasy The Office. Not the vibe of the night? Opt for Japanese dining bar Kumiko (630 W Lake St) instead.

Another Fulton Market gem is Swift & Sons* (1000 W Fulton Market). As the perfect bonus for the trend-focused spirits aficionado, Swift & Sons serves mid-strength cocktails with Sommarøy Spirits, empowering guests to keep the night going without the full-proof side effects.

If you’re hoping to cool off along the river while staying in the West Loop area, check out Gibsons Italia* (233 N Canal St), another spot serving up mid-strength Sommarøy sips.

Pilsen:

Catching a show at Thalia Hall or touring the incredible eats Pilson has to offer? Stop at The Alderman (1163 W 18th St), a swanky cocktail bar from the mind of Chicago’s most award-winning mixologist, Lance Bowman. With only 16 seats, this intimate gem is situated within Pilson Yards in the heart of the neighborhood.

River North/Gold Coast:

Do cocktails that feature fresh exotic fruit sound right up your alley? Head to River North tiki bar Three Dots and a Dash (435 N Clark St) to transport yourself to a tropical paradise.

If you’re looking for the perfect nightcap or way to unwind after a long day of strolling along the shops on Rush Street, head to Maple & Ash* (8 W Maple St) – because what says steakhouse like a good martini? Insider tip: treat yourself to a few more by making them mid-strength with Sommarøy Gin or Vodka.

Hyde Park:

In the mood for live music with your cocktail? The Promontory (5311 S Lake Park Ave W) boasts a stylish and modern atmosphere with live shows every weekend. The cocktail menu is just as exciting, from a classic margarita to a Hyde Park Sidecar, featuring cognac, triple sec, lemon and simple syrup.

If you’re looking for a place that has it all, from high-end steakhouse and nightlife vibes to beautiful brunches, visit Chemistry (5121 S. Harper Ave). The cocktail menu is full of creative, handcrafted cocktails made with love, including seasonal sips like the Heatwave Margarita, perfect for summer.

North Center

Nestled up north is The Victor Bar (4011 N Damen Ave), a cozy neighborhood joint serving up balanced cocktails in an approachable yet upscale environment.

To keep the neighborhood vibes going, check out The Long Room (1612 W Irving Park Rd). In addition to an ever-changing beer list, you can also find expertly crafted classic cocktails.

Wicker Park:

If your plans take you northwest, don’t skip the James Beard Award-winning speakeasy vibes at The Violet Hour (1520 N Damen Ave). With a single entryway and an ever-changing mural outside, you’ll find prohibition-style cocktails and good times within.

To keep your night of cocktails going, stroll over to The Up Room (2018 W North Ave). Situated on the Robey Hotel’s rooftop, it offers a chic cocktail selection in an art deco space with one of the best views in the city.
